| Theological Task Force convenes again

The Theological Task Force on Peace, Unity and Purity in the PC(USA) met
again for deliberations, this time in Chicago, early in August.
The Task Force looked at the Presbyterian Church's
historic ways of dealing with tough issues - and was reminded that conflict
is nothing new.
Of the many reports on last week's meeting of the Task
Force on the Peace, Unity, and Purity of the Church, one of the more
comprehensive is

Task Force ponders meaning of peace, unity, and purity.
John Filiatreau of
Presbyterian News Service summarizes the group's efforts to gain clarity
on the three major concepts of peace, unity and purity.
Barbara Wheeler reminded the group: "This is God's church, not ours. It is
not in our power to make it more peaceful, more unified, more pure. … These
are qualities that are not our own doing, that we cannot confer on
ourselves."

Considering
other ways of working
Outlook also provides a
report by Leslie Scanlon on the Task Force's efforts to learns from other
cultures about dealing with conflict and decision-making. Perspectives came
from Native American and African American cultures, as well as from
contemporary approaches to finding consensus and practicing the art of
discernment. (This of course involved the daring notion that God works
through ways other than those of white men dressed in dark suits!)
