Fair Food Symposium

Immokalee Workers will sponsor symposium on "Human Rights and the Struggle for Fair Food," Jan. 15-16.

[12-6-04]

The Rev. Noelle Damico, Coordinator of the Taco Bell Boycott for the PC(USA), sends this information:

Dear Friends:

January 15-16, 2005, the PC(USA) will join with other religious bodies and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers to sponsor a symposium called "Human Rights and the Struggle for Fair Food: Making Dr. King's Dream Our Reality."

We hope you will join us for this event which will be held at the Coalition of Immokalee Workers headquarters in Florida. It will be a unique time to build community with the workers and religious supporters, to be equipped to preach and teach on the boycott and the issues underlying it, and share in a community wide celebration of Dr. King's life.

A flyer is attached with registration information. For folks flying in, the closest airport is Ft. Meyers (Southwest Florida Regional Airport). The local hotel is the Immokalee Inn. Some scholarship money is available.

Please feel free to contact me with additional questions or thoughts. And be sure to keep visiting www.pcusa.org/boycott for the latest news and resources!

Peace, Noelle

Human Rights and the Struggle for Fair Food: Making Dr. King's Dream Our Reality

Noelle Damico, Coordinator of the Taco Bell Boycott for the PC(USA), sends this update on plans for a symposium on Human Rights and the Struggle for Fair Food, January 15-16, 2005.

A Faith-Based Symposium in the Heart of Florida's Farmworker Community
January 15 & 16, 2005, Immokalee, Florida

Join the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), communities of faith, and religious leaders from across the country for this symposium where we will explore Dr. King's dream in light of the struggle for fair food, an end to slavery in the fields, and the Taco Bell boycott campaign. With special workshops for newcomers, seasoned allies, preachers, and youth, participants will emerge equipped to teach and preach on these matters in their own congregations in ways that build community, develop courage, and inspire change. The symposium will include a worship service and public celebration of Dr. King's life and legacy with the Immokalee community on Saturday evening, January 16th.

Sponsored by: the Coalition of Immokalee Workers; the Disciples Home Missions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); the Peace and Justice Office of the Diocese of Venice; Interfaith Action of Southwest Florida; the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.; National Farm Worker Ministry; Pax Christi USA; the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.); School of Theology, University of the Poor; United Church of Christ Justice and Witness Ministries; United Methodist Church - General Board of Church and Society and the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights.

This blog seeks to glorify God through prayer, work, art, and intellectual reflection. Through articles and ensuing discussion we hope to become an active and thoughtful community.
