Peacemaking Dinner at
General Assembly
[4-24-06]The Presbyterian Peacemaking 25th
Anniversary Celebration and Dinner will take place on Monday, June 18 from
5:30 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel in Birmingham, AL.
The Presbyterian Peacemaking Program is pleased to announce that the program
at the 217th General Assembly (2006) dinner will include the Rev. Dr. Mark
Lomax as a speaker, music by the Congo Choir, and a celebration of the 25th
anniversary of Peacemaking: The Believers’ Calling.
The Rev. Dr. Mark "Keita" Lomax is the founding pastor of First Afrikan
Church in Lithonia, Georgia. He serves as assistant professor of homiletics
at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He holds
a Bachelor of Arts degree from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio; a Master
of Divinity degree from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio; and a
Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
Dr. Lomax is a member of Leadership DeKalb, the United Ministerial Alliance
of DeKalb County, and the board of Concerned Black Clergy of Metropolitan
Atlanta. He has published several articles on preaching in the Black
tradition and Christian liturgy and worship in various Presbyterian
journals. He also published a chapter on the theology of Marcus M. Garvey,
which appeared inMakers of Christian Theology in American, published
by Abingdon Press in 1997. Dr. Lomax believes that African descended
Christian leaders should take their cultures seriously as they do theology
and develop liturgies of worship for the people of God.
The Congo Choir is being created in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Members will represent the various presbyteries in the country. The Congo
Choir will participate in the opening worship of the assembly and will tour
in presbyteries and churches in the eastern US. The tour will celebrate and
share the musical talents and cultures of the Congolese people; inspire a
more hopeful view of this large and pivotal nation in Central Africa;
encourage US participation and aid in the DRC, while nurturing
self-sufficiency and promoting health, education and well-being in the DRC;
and raise public awareness for the challenges facing communities in the DRC
and their dreams of a better life for their impoverished people.
