| Canada's religious leaders urge
Summit of the Americas to build a "neighborly" economy

As the leaders of 34 nations gather for the Summit of the Americas in
Quebec City beginning on Friday, April 20, Canadian religious leaders,
both Catholic and Protestant, have urged them to pay attention to the
growing rich-poor gap, and to respect human rights.
According to a
report from Religion News Service, the Canadian Council of Christians
has issued a statement which declares to the heads of state from North
and South America: "Your coming together in peace as leaders of
neighboring nations can be a sign of hope. . . . On the other hand, it
can symbolize a new and threatening conformism, with elected governments
bowing to market-driven forces as if these latter were fated to rule
humanity."
The religious
leaders, including the heads of Canada's Catholic, United, Anglican,
Lutheran and Presbyterian denominations, wrote a prayer for the Summit
of the Americas, which ends by calling on the leaders to create "a
more generous, sustainable and neighborly today and tomorrow."
