| Another look at inter-religious
violence in Indonesia
[3-21-01]
There have been many reports on the inter-religious violence in
Indonesia. The Christian Science Monitor reports on one
Protestant church outside Jakarta that was burned by a Muslim group a
couple years ago, and still has not been able to get permission to
rebuild.
The main point of the story is the way in which a long
(if sometimes shaky) climate of religious tolerance in Indonesia is
eroding. President Abdurrahman Wahid, himself a Muslim imam, has tried
to defend an attitude of tolerance, but as the story points out,
"Groups representing radical political interests are pursuing their
agendas in the vacuum created by a failing legal system and government
overwhelmed by other crises."
Where Christians are close to being in the majority, they too have
engaged in violence. In Maluku (the area of including the island of
Ambon, where much of the violence has occurred) "dozens of mosques
have been burned. In the past month, mostly Christian Dayaks have
slaughtered 500 Muslim Madurese in Indonesian Borneo, though race has
been more important in that conflict than religion. In May 2000, dozens
of Muslims were killed by Christians near Poso, central Sulawesi."
