EAST TIMOR UPDATE
from the Rev John Barr, Secretary for Indonesia and East
Timor, Uniting Church in Australia
Life After Death in Timor
[forwarded to an EcuNet meeting by Cliff Hicks on Mar
28, 2001; published here on 4-4-01]
Lorosa'e -- In March 35 lay pastors gathered in Dili
to participate in a study program for ordained ministry. This will
involve a one-year program with 3 one-week intensives followed by
three-week periods of reflection in a local congregation. Meanwhile, the
Uniting Church in Australia continues to support a food consolidation
program in Watulari, intensive English language programs in Dili and the
resourcing of staff serving with the protestant Church's community
development agency, Yayasan Naroman.
East Timor is an ongoing story of life emerging out of death. It's a
remarkable story and the Uniting Church is working closely with the
small Protestant Church and its development agency, Yayasan Naroman, as
the task of nation building moves forward.
I am deeply impressed by the quality of leadership emerging in East
Timor. Times remain tough and there is no guarantee that the transition
from United Nations administration to independent nation will be easy.
Yet there is hope and there is a great zest for life. With these
significant qualities, East Timor no doubt has a future.

voices of feminist theologians of all stripes: scholars, clergy,
students, exiles, missionaries, workers, thinkers, artists, lovers
and devotees, from many parts of the world, all children of the God
in whose image women are made. .... This blog seeks to glorify God
through prayer, work, art, and intellectual reflection. Through
articles and ensuing discussion we hope to become an active and
thoughtful community. |
