Anti-human trafficking bill passes
House
Doug King
[10-7-00]
A bill aimed at combating the trafficking in human
beings -- primarily women and children who are exploited for the sex
trade and sweatshop labor -- passed the House on Friday, October 7, by a
vote of 371 to 1. It is expected to pass the Senate and to be signed by
the President.
This bill, sponsored by Sen. Paul Wellstone of Minnesota, along with
Republican Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, would among others things:
 | expand US programs to help victims of such
trafficking in the US, and aid victims in other nations as well; |
 | grant visas that would allow some victims to remain
in the US if they offer reasonable assistance to investigators
seeking to prosecute the traffickers; |
 | establishes tough penalties, up to life
imprisonment, for trafficking; |
 | mandates the State Department to report on other
countries' efforts to prevent trafficking, and authorizes sanctions
against nations which fail to meet minimal standards.
