Are we becoming The Incredible Shrinking
Church?

(How's that for a slogan, folks? "A shrunken gospel for a
shrunken church!")
In the latest issue of Presbyterian Outlook, the
Rev. John Wimberly, pastor of Western Presbyterian Church in Washington,
DC, warns that our Presbyterian Church is may drive away many of our new
members, by imposing forms of narrow moralism that make no sense to
them. This may undermine many of our growing congregations such as his
own.
"In some ways," he adds, "we have
taught our new members too well. We have taught them to become students
of Scripture. We have taught them to trust their own theological eyes
and ears. We have taught them to do what Jesus would do. We have taught
them that 'God alone is ruler of the conscience.' The independence of
these new members is not a sign of individualism run amuck in the
Presbyterian Church. It is a sign of the captivating, redeeming power of
the Word of God as it operates in and upon fresh, open hearts and
minds."
These, he is saying, are precisely the people we
invite into our churches; and they are the ones whom we will drive away
if present policies continue.

GA actions
ratified (or not) by the presbyteries
A number of the most important actions of the 219th
General Assembly have now been acted upon by the presbyteries,
confirming most of them as amendments to the PC(USA) Book of Order.
We provided resources to help inform the
reflection and debate, along with updates on the voting.
Our three areas of primary interest have been:

Amendment 10-A,
which removes the current ban on
lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender persons being considered as
possible candidates for ordination as elder or ministers.
Approved! |

Amendment 10-2,
which would add the Belhar Confession to our Book of
Confessions. Disapproved, because as an amendment
to the Book of Confessions it needed a 2/3 vote, and did not
receive that. |
|
Amendment
10-1, which adopts the new Form of Government
that was approved by the Assembly. Approved. |
