| Sharing in the struggle with the death
of Jesus

The struggle with the meaning of Good Friday and
Easter is a vital part of the Christian year for many of us. (Others
find those events quite easy to reduce to neat formulae. If you're among
them, you can probably skip the rest of this.)
You may find comfort in knowing that you're not the only one struggling.
A story in the Dallas
Morning News tells of similar struggles, focusing on the
doctrine of the atonement, among pastors and seminary students. Some are
finding Peter Abelard's view of the death of Christ (as a revelation of
divine love and a model for sacrificial human love) more helpful (and
more biblical) than the dominant tradition of Jesus' death as a
sacrifice for human sin.
