Hudson River congregations send letters
of dissent from G-6.0106b
[2-15-01]
Joe Gilmore, pastor of South Presbyterian Church in Dobbs Ferry, NY, has
invited inclusive congregations in the PCUSA, to join in an act of dissent
and public statement of noncompliance with G-6.0106b. Eleven churches in
Hudson River Presbytery have already submitted letters to their clerk of
presbytery stating that they cannot comply with G-6.0106b.
Their web
page gives a list of the eleven churches, and other congregations that
have taken similar actions in the past. It also lists these reasons for
sessions to participate in the action:
"Why should my session participate in this
action?
 | This is a great chance to be proactive in affirming
your congregation's welcome to all. |
 | This action upholds the Presbyterian tradition of
allocating to sessions freedom and responsibility in matters of
pastoral care and local leadership |
 | This action is timely, sending a clear message to the
2001 General Assembly that G-6.0106b must be removed from the Book of
Order. |
 | There is strength in numbers. Commissioners (and PJCs)
will find it difficult to dismiss dissenting churches as a fringe
element when they see how many congregations from many different
theological perspectives speak with one voice on this issue. |
 | This is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with
churches that have already risked or faced judicial action because
they made it clear they could not, in good conscience, comply with
G-6.0106b." |
Mt.
Auburn Presbyterian Church of Cincinnati, Ohio, has also submitted
(for the ninth year in a row) a letter of dissent.
