Clinton signs "Jubilee" debt
relief measure

Presbyterian News Service has published a lengthy
analysis of the significant roles
played by Presbyterians -- as a church and as individuals -- in
working for passage of this act. [1-15-01]
 Presbyterians
are working with others to move to the next phase of the Jubilee
campaign, with a new focus on AIDS treatment, social and economic
justice. [2-23-01]
Religion News Service has reported on President
Clinton's signing of a 14.9 billion aid package on November 6, which
includes $435 million designated to ease the debt burdens of some of the
world's poorest nations.
At the signing ceremony at the White House, Clinton
acknowledged the important role of the religious community's
"Jubilee Year" campaign. Among the religious leaders present
were the Rev. Elenora Giddings Ivory of the Presbyterian Washington
Office, and the Rev. David Beckman or Bread for the World.
The report quotes Clinton as saying, "Not since
Dr. Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement have religious
people at the grassroots been so clearly responsible for raising a
justice issue and winning change."
Giddings Ivory said debt forgiveness is simply
"an act of justice."

GA actions
ratified (or not) by the presbyteries
A number of the most important actions of the 219th
General Assembly have now been acted upon by the presbyteries,
confirming most of them as amendments to the PC(USA) Book of Order.
We provided resources to help inform the
reflection and debate, along with updates on the voting.
Our three areas of primary interest have been:

Amendment 10-A,
which removes the current ban on
lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender persons being considered as
possible candidates for ordination as elder or ministers.

Amendment 10-2,
which would add the Belhar Confession to our Book of
Confessions. Disapproved, because as an amendment
to the Book of Confessions it needed a 2/3 vote, and did not
receive that. |
|
Amendment
10-1, which adopts the new Form of Government
that was approved by the Assembly. Approved. |
