| Fundamentalist Islam is a powerful
motivator for hostility to the West.

Karen Armstrong, a British theologian and former
Catholic nun, is the author of highly respected studies of Islam,
Buddhism, and fundamentalism. She has been interviewed often since
September 11. The on-line magazine Salon has posted one recent
interview, in which Armstrong talks of fundamentalist Islam as motivated
largely by reactions against modernization, coupled with popular Muslim
rejection of what are perceived as failures of the "modern"
Western world. This hostility toward the West drives even many moderate
Muslims into the fundamentalist camp.
