Witherspoon chapter forms in Montana
[8-27-03]
This just in from the Rev. John Shuck,
pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Billings, Montana
Witherspoon-Montana has now been formed
and about 45 folks (so far all in Yellowstone Presbytery--but we know some
Glacier Presbytery folks will hop aboard, too) have signed on to
participate in conversation, education, action and dancing regarding
social justice issues in Montana in church and society. We hope to have
some programs and speakers, BBQ's, talent shows, and what all to show that
social justice and inclusiveness can be fun as well as important
especially when we do it together!
We already have
our very own
website! Add it to your favorites!
And come to a gathering on Thursday, September 4th at 7
p.m. at First Presbyterian Billings for discussion about who and what we
are all about and where we are going!
Or come to a gathering Monday, September 8th at 6 p.m.
at First Presbyterian Church in Anaconda for discussion about who and what
we are all about where we are going!
Or come to both!
"Neither death, nor life, nor powers, nor rulers, nor
height, nor depth, nor snowstorms, nor wildfires, nor the continental
divide shall separate Montana Progressive Presbys from one another."

growing

Heartland Presbytery
James Tilton of Heartland Presbytery reports that a
group of Witherspoon friends is meeting there fairly regularly.
Their most recent gathering was over lunch during the
presbytery meeting that voted 150 to 139 to affirm Amendment A. They
have decided to continue using the presbytery lunch times for their
meetings.
Soon after Sept 11th they held a public
forum in which we had the local head of the Islamic School, the editor
of the local Jewish Chronicle, and a member of a local Friends
meeting presented a panel with questions from the audience afterwards.
It was held at the Westport Presbyterian Church, which is in a mixed
neighborhood in Kansas City, MO. About 45 people attended.
Jim Tilton adds: "We continually try to keep
issues that reflect the Witherspoon mission statement before the folk,
and offer help in sorting through them."
Scott Myers of the Westport Church was the group's
Moderator last year. This year the officers are Allen Maruyama,
Moderator, Ky Weekley, Interim Associate at Grace Covenant in Overland
Park, KS and James Tilton again as the secretary/treasurer.
To contact the group, you can phone James R. Tilton at
(913) 381-2441, or e-mail him at jtilton@oz.sunflower.org
And from Oklahoma -
Witherspoon board member Jill Acree sends this word:
We're pleased to announce the formation of Witherspoon:
OK is in progress. With a solid core of four interested
persons, the group is trying to determine a central location and to work
out the logistics of meeting face to face. Anyone interested in a
progressive perspective on the current issues of the day is encouraged
to contact Jill Acree at acree@wilnet1.com.

PVJ's
Facebook page
Mitch Trigger, PVJ's
Secretary/Communicator, has created a Facebook page where
Witherspoon members and others can gather to exchange news and
views. Mitch and a few others have posted bits of news, both
personal and organizational. But there’s room for more!
You can post your own news and views,
or initiate a conversation about a topic of interest to you. |

Voices of Sophia blog
Heather Reichgott, who has created
this new blog for Voices of Sophia, introduces it:
After fifteen years of scholarship
and activism, Voices of Sophia presents a blog. Here, we present the
voices of feminist theologians of all stripes: scholars, clergy,
students, exiles, missionaries, workers, thinkers, artists, lovers
and devotees, from many parts of the world, all children of the God
in whose image women are made. .... This blog seeks to glorify God
through prayer, work, art, and intellectual reflection. Through
articles and ensuing discussion we hope to become an active and
thoughtful community. |
