Presbyterian Disaster Assistance
Situation Report
El Salvador Earthquake
January 14, 2001
[Click
here for a report from Karla Koll in Guatemala.]
At least 380 people are reported dead in El Salvador
and six deaths are reported in Guatemala following an earthquake on
January 13, 2001. 1200 people are reported missing in El Salvador and
hundreds are wounded. The epicenter was about 65 miles southeast of San
Salvador and was felt in the neighboring countries of Guatemala,
Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and as far as Mexico City. As many as
many as 500 aftershocks, some of them fierce, continued to cause panic
and drive people out of houses and offices more than 24 hours after the
quake.
The Salvadoran government decreed situation of
national emergency, after gathering the national emergency committee and
have closed the international airport while the damages are measured.
PDA is immediately rushing One Great Hour of Sharing
funds to our Reformed partners in El Salvador. Funds are being used to
provide basic relief items of blankets, plastic sheeting, food and
water. Financial contributions are always needed in disaster situations
and a special designated account is being established for those wishing
to provide financial support for disaster survivors.
ACT (Action by Churches Together) members in El
Salvador have dispatched their emergency teams to the affected areas to
access the situation and the needs. They will shortly begin aid and
reconstruction activities. Members in Honduras,
Guatemala and Nicaragua are on alert and ready to mobilize their
emergency teams to support the members in El Salvador.
As soon as the airport is opened, PDA's Latin American
emergency facilitator will be traveling to the area to help in the
assessments, help in the relief efforts, and provide pastoral care.
Additional information will be posted to the web
site (http://pda.pcusa.org) as it becomes available.
Please pray for those who lost loved ones, for the
disaster survivors, and for the caregivers as they provide comfort in
very difficult conditions.
Please send responses to this message to pda@pcusa.org
or to receive an answer to a specific question please direct your
response to Pamelab@ctr.pcusa.org.

voices of feminist theologians of all stripes: scholars, clergy,
students, exiles, missionaries, workers, thinkers, artists, lovers
and devotees, from many parts of the world, all children of the God
in whose image women are made. .... This blog seeks to glorify God
through prayer, work, art, and intellectual reflection. Through
articles and ensuing discussion we hope to become an active and
