Bush is urged to release funds for UN family planning program

[2-8-02]

President Bush is refusing to release funds appropriated for support of the United Nations Population Fund, in his effort to placate the Religious Right. The Christian Science Monitor carries an op-ed essay by Professor Steven W. Sinding, former director of the population program at the US Agency for International Development, who urges the President to act in accord with the vast majority of Americans, an in the interests of the world's poor, by helping to fund responsible family planning programs around the world.

UCC Justice and Peace Action Network:

Preserve funding for the UN Population Fund

[1-17-02]

On January 10th, President Bush signaled his intent to cut off funding for the United Nations Population Fund. UNFPA provides much needed family planning, HIV/AIDS and STD prevention, sexuality education, maternal health and other reproductive health services in more than 140 countries. UNFPA often works in places where no other organization is able to work.

Congress has already approved $34 million for UNFPA, but the President may invoke his executive powers to withhold funding. If funding is withheld, it could result in 2 million unwanted pregnancies, 4,700 maternal deaths, and more than 77,000 infant and child deaths across the globe.

Last year, President Bush requested $25 million for UNFPA -- $600,000 of which was to assist women fleeing Afghanistan. Clearly the Administration believes that UNJA is a critical partner in improving the lives of women in Afghanistan.

The United Church of Christ General Synod has spoken for more than 30 years in support of women's reproductive choices and urged UCC members to resist attempts to erode or negate such choices. The global situation is dire and will be come far worse if UNFPA funding is eliminated.

The Justice and Witness Ministries urges you to contact President Bush and implore him NOT to invoke his executive powers to withhold funding from UNFPA. Also contact your members of Congress and ask them to urge the President to continue support of UNFPA.
