| Religious progressives organize to
offer an alternative voice to the Religious Right
Leaders from over 200 groups initiate Progressive Religious
Partnership
[4-11-01]
A new coalition of groups, calling itself the
Progressive Religious Partnership, gathered for the first time on April
4-6 in Washington, DC, to commemorate the anniversary of the
assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and to pledge to work
together to resist the forces and organizations that they see as
threatening the work of King and many others for justice in this nation.
The Rev. George Regas, of the Regas Institute, which co-hosted the
conference with the People for the American Way Foundation, said,
"There has been no shortage of God talk and God talkers in the
public square, but there has been little suggestion of compassion or
justice in all their talk."
Workshops focused on issues such as AIDS, the 2000 presidential
election, missile defense, sweatshops and welfare, school vouchers,
capital punishment, ecology, reproductive rights and same-sex unions.
The aim of the Progressive Religious Partnership is to build a
grassroots organization around such issues, involving politically active
young adults as well as veterans of the civil rights movement.

Voices of Sophia blog
Heather Reichgott, who has created
this new blog for Voices of Sophia, introduces it:
After fifteen years of scholarship
and activism, Voices of Sophia presents a blog. Here, we present the
voices of feminist theologians of all stripes: scholars, clergy,
students, exiles, missionaries, workers, thinkers, artists, lovers
and devotees, from many parts of the world, all children of the God
in whose image women are made. .... This blog seeks to glorify God
through prayer, work, art, and intellectual reflection. Through
articles and ensuing discussion we hope to become an active and
thoughtful community. |
