Progressive organizations join to respond to Promise
Keepers rallies
[published in May 2000]
We have just received this note from Ken Brooker Langston,
National Field Director of Americans United.
Friends and Allies--
The Promise Keepers are coming to cities across America, preaching the
subordination of women, proclaiming a "Christian nation" and
demanding that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons convert to
heterosexuality in order to be "real Christians" and
"real Americans."
They talk about "racial
reconciliation," but refuse to address issues of racial injustice
(such as the attacks on affirmative action now taking place throughout
America). With their intense "cell groups," they undermine the
authority of local clergy--especially women religious leaders.
Americans United is joining with Equal Partners in Faith and other
progressive organizations to respond to those aspects of Promise Keepers
that we find troubling. We're not planning to bash the Promise Keepers,
only to use the occasion of their gatherings to raise concerns (about
their sexism, homophobia and "Christian nationalism") and to
publicly promote our own values and vision of America.
We need your help! Please look at the list below (or visit the PK
website) and tell us if
you have any groups or contacts in these cities. Also let us know if
you'd be willing to help us make contact with the people you are
suggesting.
You may contact me at langston@au.org
I thank you for your help in this important matter and hope to hear from
you soon.
Thank you.

this new blog for Voices of Sophia, introduces it:
After fifteen years of scholarship
and activism, Voices of Sophia presents a blog. Here, we present the
voices of feminist theologians of all stripes: scholars, clergy,
students, exiles, missionaries, workers, thinkers, artists, lovers
and devotees, from many parts of the world, all children of the God
in whose image women are made. .... This blog seeks to glorify God
through prayer, work, art, and intellectual reflection. Through
articles and ensuing discussion we hope to become an active and
thoughtful community. |
