defeat of Amendment O: "Back at square one on gay issues"

Kevin Eckstrom of Religious
News Service reports that the defeat of Amendment O does not put to
rest questions of how the PC(USA) will deal with pressures to exclude
gay and lesbian people from its life and ministry.
Parker Williamson of The Presbyterian Lay Committee is
quoted as saying that ""we were really on a roll, and this is
a defeat, but we have to see this as one defeat in a very large
war."
It is noted that
while conservatives see the basic issue as one of biblical authority,
those favoring a more open church tend to define the issue as one of "human
relationships and God's care for all [God's] creation -- gay and
straight."
